The 4:1 mission: an idea with great consequences

At the center of the collaboration: the customer 

A customer buys 18 different items from various suppliers in Asia, totaling over 200,000 pieces, and wants to deliver them as assortments packed in displays to various central warehouses. 

In the past, these items were imported from Asia ready packed in displays. In 2022, this process changed, and the displays have been packed in Göttingen ever since. Why is that? Bert Brinckmann, ZUFALL customer advisor, developed an idea of how ZUFALL can help customers in times of very expensive sea freight through increased teamwork, and with an additional sustainable approach. 

The idea of assembling the displays in Germany enabled the import volume to be reduced by around 80%. Previously, five 40′ containers were needed to transport the displays from China. Now, one is enough for the unassembled goods normally packed in cardboard boxes. Another advantage is that the display cartons can now be produced sustainably in Germany. 

An A-Team is formed 
Together with other ZUFALLers, a plan was developed from the idea and set in motion across all locations – real teamwork in the style of the A-Team: 

The order: import 200,000 parts from Asia and deliver them assembled in 4,000 displays to central warehouses on fixed delivery dates. 

The plan: 4 different companies in the ZUFALL logistics group work together on one order. 
Team Hamburg takes responsibility for management, coordination and transportation from Asia to Göttingen, Team Axthelm & Zufall from Grammetal takes care of customs clearance, Team Logimate in Göttingen takes care of packaging, and the ZUFALL forwarding company supplies the warehouses. 

The plan works! 

The benefits: The displays are now assembled and packed in Germany. This saves the freight costs of four containers and improves the sustainability balance, since the cardboard packaging for the displays can be produced in Germany.

Mission customer happiness: check! 

The goods arrived late from Asia for the very first order, while the delivery date was brought forward at the same time. 
However, as befits a true A-team, these additional challenges were overcome with flexibility and commitment – all displays reached the warehouses on time and customer happiness has already led to the 3rd order. We love it when the plan works!
