SUSTAINABILITY AT ZUFALL – AN INTERVIEW WITH PETER MÜLLER-KRONBERG

At ZUFALL, we have made it our goal to change the logistics industry. As a family business, we think across generations. This includes acting sustainably and constantly scrutinising our actions.

For us, however, sustainability is not just ecological – it is a triad of the dimensions of people, planet and profit. We are convinced that we can only be successful in the long term if we harmonise these three dimensions, despite the tensions. We asked our CEO, Peter Müller-Kronberg, about this:

Why is sustainability particularly important in logistics?

Logistics has a huge amount of leverage. Everything we hold in our hands every day is part of a global value chain, unless the cucumber was grown in the local garden and the milk comes from the farm next door. As logistics specialists, we organise and control the flow of goods. Logistics is needed everywhere. The scope of our business is such that changes have a major impact. Logistics is the industry of the future!

Are there examples of how we are living the triad of the three “Ps” of sustainability? What do we do in concrete terms?

Let’s take the utilisation of a lorry as a concrete example. Working on increasing capacity utilisation contributes to all three “Ps”: if we increase capacity utilisation, we can reduce the number of vehicles used. This means fewer emissions and less diesel or energy consumption. This contributes to the planet dimension. As a result, we have lower costs. This has an impact on the profit dimension. At the same time, team satisfaction increases, because being able to achieve top capacity utilisation is a team success. Thus, the people dimension rounds off the example.

I can give you another practical example: Our hall areas are illuminated with energy-saving LEDs. We generate some of the energy we need for this from our own photovoltaic systems. This allows us to save electricity and reduce consumption costs. At the same time, intelligent LED lighting allows us to create significantly better and safer lighting conditions for our employees.

Can we really make a difference in terms of sustainability?

Of course we can make a difference! We have just ordered 14 e-trucks and are building the necessary charging infrastructure for them. When I look at the zufall.lab, I see that we have created a place where we are working on the future of logistics with a new way of thinking. We are pioneers in a lot of things concerning sustainability and are consistently pursuing this path. We have the best prerequisites for this: We have the people in the company who are passionate and committed to shaping this path as well customers who want to grow together with the ZUFALL logistics group. The will to rethink, to actively drive change – that’s what sets us apart.

What qualities do we need as a team to be a company fit for grandchildren?

We need openness, diversity, and clear responsibilities. One thing is certain: no one can tackle the challenges that lie ahead of us alone. But together we can. With our mix of the many “old hands” in the company, who have a lot of experience, and the “young blood” who brings in new perspectives, we are on a very good path.

In its summer 2023 issue, faktor magazine also published an  interview with Peter Müller-Kronberg in which he spoke in detail about sustainability, transformation and innovation at ZUFALL.
