A powerful earthquake in Turkey and Syria claimed millions of victims. “When I saw the news about the scale of the earthquake, I knew that these people needed enormous support,” ZUFALL employee Selma Arslan says, who was particularly involved in the campaign.
Together with some of our customers and partners we at ZUFALL collected donations and organised their transport to Turkey.
CHALLENGES
As Turkey is not a member of the EU, certain conditions had to be met. Customs clearance was particularly challenging. Selma reports: “The driver needed serveral papers and, because it was also a donation, I had to obtain the customers’ pro forma invoices and send them to the consulate in Frankfurt. This turned out to be difficult.”
TRANSPORT TO THE CRISIS AREA
In cooperation with our Turkish forwarding partner BOLTAS, the consignments were transported to Italy by freight train. Then they were transported by sea freight to Istanbul and finally by lorry to the Turkish border in Edirne. From there, the national disaster relief organisation AFAD took over the transport to the crisis area.
46 PALLETS OF DONATIONS
Our customers De’Longhi Germany and EXPED AG from Zurich in particular provided a remarkable amount of donations: A whole 21 pallets were filled in a very short time. “Our contacts at De’Longhi Germany and EXPED AG were immediately prepared to support us generously and very quickly with the campaign. We are very grateful for this and greatly appreciate the donations of around 500 sleeping bags, 100 tents and 150 radiant heaters,” report account managers Holger Hamperl and Jan-Ola Gallwitz. “That’s what a good collaboration is about!”
Together with our customer Car Company, 15 more pallets of relief supplies were collected within just two days and sorted and packed late into the night by volunteers. We also received active support from numerous young people who were called upon to help via Instagram.
The remaining pallets of donations were quickly collected through private social media posts by our ZUFALLers.
Services like these show us the social relevance of logistics and what makes us special: with strong partners and very close customer loyalty, logistics ensures the basic supply of many people – even in difficult times.
