As an international freight forwarder, we at ZUFALL transport everything from pallets of jam jars to bicycles ordered online and spare parts for high-performance industrial robots. Daily business. Quite normal. And then there are transport orders with a hint of adventure.
Transporting the Gropius-Zimmer pavilion is one of them. Since 2019 the installation has been travelling through Weimar’s partner cities as an ambassador for Bauhaus, the most important school of architecture, design and art of the 20th century. Hämeenlinna was the artwork’s last stop after having travelled to Italy, France, Germany, and Poland.
In the southern Finnish city, the Gropius-Zimmer pavilion complemented a popular leisure and recreation area over the summer months.
At the beginning of August, the pavilion made of steel profiles made its way back to Weimar with us. The installation was erected in front of the Bauhaus Museum Weimar in time for the “100 years of Bauhaus Exhibition” festival week to celebrate the special anniversary.
In the summer of 1923, the Bauhaus in Weimar presented itself to the public with its first exhibition. A centrepiece: the Gropius room, which is regarded as the first holistic spatial composition of modernism, and the pavilion is the conceptual abstract of this room.
So, it’s no wonder that we organised the art transport with particular care. “The professional lorry driver knew that he had something unique on his loading area,” says Thorsten Tunkel, Team Leader LVE (Land Transport Europe) Import. He was delighted about the feedback from the project management which stated that the transport smoothly rolled onto the forecourt of the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar after a journey of almost 2,000 kilometres over land and water.
